About Learn to Talk

Learn to Talk is a First Words learning app created by Oxbridge Baby, a London-based production company that has been helping children say their first words since 2005. The ad-free app features hundreds of preschool learning videos – including the exclusive 25-episode Learn to Talk series – plus interactive games, activities, over 200 Baby Sign Language words, and free parent education resources.

Learn to Talk was created by Oxbridge Baby, a British production company specialising in preschool learning media. Our YouTube channel has over 2.5 million subscribers and more than 1 billion views worldwide. The original Learn to Talk DVD was developed in collaboration with Paediatric Speech & Language Therapist Gillian Hart.

Learn to Talk is designed for children from early babbling through to first sentences. It works well for babies and toddlers developing typically (usually 12–36 months) and is especially helpful for older children who are late talkers or need extra support with First Words.

Will This Work For My Child?

Yes. Learn to Talk was created to support children at every stage, including those taking longer to say their First Words. Our multi-sensory approach – combining video, sound, repetition and Baby Sign Language – works especially well for children who need extra time and support.

We can’t guarantee results or time frames as every child is unique, but the techniques and content are designed to give your child multiple pathways to their First Words.

Yes. Children who have started talking can use Learn to Talk to expand their vocabulary, improve pronunciation, build sentence structure, develop confidence in communication, and learn new concepts through the themed episodes.

Some children need time to warm up. Try starting with just 5-10 minutes, watching together and engaging with the content, trying different video types (some children prefer puppets, others prefer animation), using the interactive games first to build interest, or playing videos during calm times.

If your child doesn’t want to watch, don’t force them. The videos may simply not be right for them, and that’s absolutely fine.

Research suggests it can. Baby Sign Language gives children a way to communicate before they can speak, which reduces frustration for both parent and child and builds confidence in communication. Importantly, studies show it can accelerate speech development rather than delay it. Our videos weave signing naturally into every episode of the Learn to Talk series, making it easy to learn together.

Most children say their First Words between 12-18 months, though anywhere from 10-24 months can be typical. Common first words include “mama,” “dada,” or simple objects like “ball” or “dog.”

Every child develops at their own pace. Late talking doesn’t always indicate a problem. Boys often speak slightly later than girls, and bilingual children may start later but catch up quickly.

If you’re concerned, consult your GP, health visitor, or a paediatric speech and language therapist.

No. Learn to Talk is an educational tool designed to support your child’s speech development at home. It works well alongside professional speech therapy but is not a substitute for it. If you have concerns about your child’s speech, we always recommend consulting a qualified professional.

Baby Sign Language

Our signs are primarily based on British Sign Language (BSL) but not exclusively. The goal is communication and encouraging First Words, so we focus on simple, effective signs that babies can easily learn and use.

Yes. Common approaches include British Sign Language (BSL), American Sign Language (ASL), Sign Supported English (SSE), Makaton, and others. All help babies communicate before they can speak – choose whichever approach feels right for your family.

You can start whenever feels right. Many parents begin in the first year, but every child is different. Watch for signs of readiness and follow your child’s lead.

No. The videos show you the signs as you watch, and the app includes a library of over 200 Baby Sign words you can learn at your own pace. No prior knowledge needed.

Screen Time and Safety

Learn to Talk videos are designed as purposeful screen time that supports speech development. They’re slower-paced than typical children’s content, designed to encourage interaction and participation, and best watched together with a parent.

We always recommend watching together when possible, keeping sessions to age-appropriate lengths, balancing with plenty of face-to-face interaction, and using the app as one tool in your communication toolkit.

Yes. The app is 100% ad-free with child-safe navigation, no external links or pop-ups, no social features or comments, no data collection from children, and no algorithmic recommendations.
